Getting started
How do I caption my first video?
- Start a new project and pick a video from your Photos library.
- Choose the spoken language, or leave it on Auto detect, and check the estimated cost.
- Tap Create project. The app uploads the audio track, transcribes it and lays out the captions.
- Fix any words, choose a template and font, then export to Photos.
Which videos can I import?
Videos from your Photos library. Captions Cut is designed around vertical 9:16 clips, the format used by Reels, TikTok and Shorts.
If a video is stored in iCloud, iOS downloads it to your iPhone first, which needs an internet connection and free space.
Which iPhones can use it?
Any iPhone with iOS 18 or later, which means iPhone XS, XR, SE (2nd generation) and newer.
Do I need an account?
No. There’s no sign-up, email or password.
Captions and languages
Which languages can be transcribed?
The language menu shows the languages the app currently supports. At launch those are English and Turkish, plus Auto detect. If Auto detect picks the wrong language, choose the language yourself and create the captions again.
How accurate are the captions?
Captions are generated automatically, which is good but not perfect. Names, slang, background music, noise and people talking over each other can all cause mistakes. Always read your captions before you post.
How do I fix a word or its timing?
In the editor, tap the word you want to change. You can correct the text or nudge when it appears. Your changes are saved in the project on your iPhone.
Credits (CRD)
What is a credit?
Credits, shown as CRD, pay for transcription. 1 CRD = 1 second of audio transcribed, rounded up to the next whole second for each video.
How is the cost of a video estimated?
Before you create captions, the app shows an estimated cost based on the length of the video’s audio. For example:
- a 30-second clip costs 30 CRD
- a 45.3-second clip costs 46 CRD
- a 2-minute clip costs 120 CRD
If your balance is too low, the app tells you how many credits the video needs and how many you have.
Where do credits come from?
Two places: Captions Cut Pro includes transcription credits every month or year, and you can buy one-time credit packs: 30 minutes (1,800 CRD) for $2.99, 2 hours (7,200 CRD) for $8.99, 5 hours (18,000 CRD) for $19.99. Prices are US prices and vary by country.
Which credits are used first?
Subscription credits are used first. Credits from packs are only used once your subscription credits for the current period have run out.
Do credits expire?
Credits from packs never expire. Subscription credits expire at the end of each billing period and don’t roll over.
What happens to my credits if a transcription fails?
They go back to your balance automatically. You don’t need to contact us.
Subscriptions and purchases
What does Captions Cut Pro include?
Monthly or yearly transcription credits, exports without the watermark, caption translation and Pro fonts. Pro costs $7.99 a month or $49.99 a year in the US; local prices vary by country.
How do I cancel or change my subscription?
Subscriptions are billed and managed by Apple. On your iPhone, open Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions, then choose Captions Cut.
Cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period to avoid the next renewal. You keep Pro until the period ends. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
How do I get a refund?
Apple handles all payments and refunds for App Store purchases, so we can’t issue refunds ourselves. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
How do I restore my purchases?
Open Settings in Captions Cut, tap Upgrade to Pro, then tap Restore at the bottom of the screen. Make sure you’re signed in to the App Store with the same Apple ID you used to buy.
My purchase isn’t showing up
Check that you’re online, wait a minute and try Restore. If it still doesn’t appear, email support@captionscut.com with the date of the purchase and the order ID from your Apple receipt.
Styling, fonts and the watermark
Why is there a watermark on my video?
Videos exported without an active Captions Cut Pro subscription include a Captions Cut watermark. Upgrade to Pro and export again to get a clean video; videos exported before you upgraded keep their watermark.
Can I use the fonts in videos I publish?
Yes. Every caption font in Captions Cut is an open-licence font (SIL Open Font License 1.1 or Apache License 2.0), free to use in the videos you make, including commercial ones. The full list is in the app under Settings > Font licences. Some display fonts, such as Anton, Bebas Neue and Bangers, are part of Pro.
Exporting
Which export quality should I choose?
1080p is right for most social posts and exports faster. Choose 4K when your original clip is 4K and you want to keep the detail. You can set the default under Settings > Export quality in the app.
Where do exported videos go?
Straight to your Photos library. The first time, iOS asks for permission to add photos. If you declined, open the iPhone Settings > Captions Cut > Photos and allow access.
Privacy
What happens to my video?
It stays on your iPhone. When you create captions, the app extracts only the audio track on your device and uploads it for transcription. The audio file is deleted as soon as transcription finishes, whether it succeeds or fails.
What do you keep?
- A copy of your captions on our servers for up to 7 days, so we can help if something goes wrong.
- Your purchases and credit balance.
The sound of your video is deleted as soon as the captions are made. There are no ads, and no tracking unless you allow it when iOS asks. Anonymous usage data helps us improve the App; it never includes your videos or captions. Read the full Privacy Policy.
How do I delete my data?
Deleting the app removes your projects from your iPhone. To delete the records we hold, email privacy@captionscut.com. The Privacy Policy explains what to include so we can find them.
Troubleshooting
I’m offline
Creating captions needs an internet connection, because the audio is transcribed on our servers. So do purchases and restoring them. Editing and exporting your existing projects works offline.
My iPhone is low on storage
Importing a video from iCloud and exporting, especially in 4K, both need free space. Free up some space in Settings > General > iPhone Storage, then try again.
Transcription failed
Your credits have already gone back to your balance automatically. Check your connection and try again. If it keeps failing, email support@captionscut.com with the time it happened and the length of the video.
The captions are in the wrong language
Auto detect can guess wrong on short or mixed-language clips. Choose the spoken language yourself and create the captions again. Creating captions again uses credits again.
Still need help?
Email us and we’ll get back to you. It helps to include your iPhone model, iOS version and the app version, which is shown at the bottom of Settings in the app.
