How Instagram’s auto captions work on Reels
By the maker of Captions Cut. Facts checked on from the pages listed under Sources.
The short answer
Instagram uses speech recognition to add closed captions to a Reel when you turn on Enable closed captions under More options before sharing; another toggle translates them. They appear at the bottom of the reel, only in the phone apps, and viewers can hide them. For styled captions, Instagram’s separate Edits app generates captions you can style, retime and show in two languages.
Closed captions on Reels
- New reel: Next › Next › More options › Enable closed captions; a Translate closed captions toggle sits beside it.
- Posted reel: Edit › More options.
- Phone apps only; not on a computer.
- Instagram’s help pages do not list the languages.
Captions in Edits
In Edits, Captions in a project asks for the spoken language, a style and options (punctuation, title case, whether to show curse words), then generates a caption layer you can style, edit, fade, show in two languages and move; drag its ends to retime it.
What they do not do
- Closed captions are a viewer setting, not part of the video, so they do not travel with a download or repost.
- No caption file upload is described for Reels.
- Captions made in Edits live in Edits; the same clip for TikTok or Shorts is captioned again.

Questions
Does Instagram add captions to Reels automatically?
Only if you turn on Enable closed captions for the reel, or your settings do it for you; viewers can still hide them.
