How CapCut’s auto captions work

By the maker of Captions Cut. Facts checked on from the pages listed under Sources.

The short answer

In CapCut, Captions › Auto Captions transcribes a clip’s speech into caption text you can edit line by line and style with templates. CapCut says recognition runs on its servers on mobile and the web (the desktop app can work locally in some regions), so the audio leaves your device and a poor connection interrupts it. CapCut’s pages put the language count at about 30, and SRT import and batch export are desktop or web features.

Where to find them

  • Mobile: Captions › Auto Captions; confirm the language and pick a template, then generate.
  • Desktop: Captions › Auto Captions; choose the audio source and language.
  • Web: Captions › Auto Captions › Recognise; CapCut recommends Chrome or Edge and clear mono audio.

CapCut’s own pages name the menus differently (some say Text › Auto Captions), as the app changes.

Limits

  • Recognition runs in the cloud on mobile and the web.
  • The mobile app cannot import SRT or TXT subtitles; desktop takes both, the web takes SRT.
  • Speaker separation, punctuation refinement and batch SRT export may be desktop or web only, depending on region and version.
  • CapCut’s pages do not say whether auto captions need Pro or a login.
