Free online caption generators: what each one actually gives you
Captions Cut’s web editor captions a clip in the browser without uploading the video and without a watermark on Pro; CapCut, VEED, Kapwing and Submagic caption online too, upload the video to do it, and add a watermark or a cap on their free tiers.

“Free online caption generator” usually means one of two things: a free trial that watermarks the export, or a free tier with a cap. This guide says which is which, and where the video goes, for the browser tools people use most. It is written by the maker of Captions Cut, whose web editor is on the list; the others are described from their sites as checked on 21 October 2026.
1. Captions Cut web editor ours
Best for captions in the browser without uploading the video.
Open captionscut.com/edit, drop an MP4, MOV or WebM up to 30 minutes, and the speech becomes word-by-word animated captions in one of 48 styles. The clip stays in the browser; only its audio is sent for transcription and deleted right after; the captioned video is rendered in the browser and downloaded, in 1080p or 4K. No account is needed to start, new accounts get free credits, and captioning then costs 1 credit per second of audio. Free exports carry a small mark; Pro removes it. Works in a current Chrome, Edge or Safari. It is the one on this list we make.
2. CapCut online
Best for a free browser editor with captions, if an upload is fine.
CapCut’s web editor includes auto captions and the rest of CapCut’s tools. The video is uploaded to CapCut’s servers. The editor is free; CapCut Pro, as of October 2026, unlocks 4K export and the full toolkit on a subscription. Some templates add a CapCut end clip.
3. VEED
Best for a browser video editor with subtitles, translation and team features.
VEED is a full online editor with automatic subtitles and translation. The video is uploaded. As of October 2026, its free tier is limited and watermarks exports; paid plans remove the watermark and raise length and export limits. Pick it if you edit whole videos in the browser with a team.
4. Kapwing
Best for a browser editor with subtitles and a collaborative workspace.
Kapwing is another full online editor with automatic subtitles, translation and brand kits. The video is uploaded. As of October 2026, free exports carry a watermark and have length limits; paid plans remove both. Pick it for collaborative editing in the browser.
5. Submagic
Best for captions with automatic emojis, zooms and b-roll.
Submagic captions a clip in the browser and adds emojis, zooms, b-roll and sound effects. The video is uploaded. As of October 2026, the free trial covers a few short watermarked videos; plans start around $19 a month with a cap on videos. Captions Cut vs Submagic.
How to choose
- If the video must not leave your computer, only the Captions Cut web editor on this list keeps it there; it sends the audio alone.
- If you want to cut and edit the video online too, CapCut, VEED or Kapwing.
- If you want extras added automatically, Submagic.
- Every free tier here either watermarks or caps; read the export screen before you spend time on the edit.
